Twenty-five years of running to beat who? Or what? The plethora of races I have participated in were a challenge to reach the finish line – always clearly marked – as fast as I could and before as many other athletes as possible. Whether 5 kilometres or 50, I have hurried to breast the tape that was exactly where the organizers said it would be.
The irony is that no matter how much I train to improve my fitness, the one competitor I want to stay ahead of will eventually catch up with me. Always outfitted in black, he is the one who’ll draw the finish line on the ground where I least expect it.
